ABOUT W.O.R.K. W.O.R.K. stands for Willpower, Organization, Respect and Knowledge and is a non-profit group whose goal is to build housing in Sri Lanka for those whose homes were destroyed by the December 26th 2004 tsunami.  Upon completing a two week reconstruction project in April 2005 with the aid group Global Crossroad, Jesper Nielsen of Nakusp, British Colombia and Chris Durham of Cookeville, Tennessee decided to return to Sri Lanka in early 2006 with the goal of building as many homes as their fundraising efforts allowed.

Knowing only through NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) projects were the Sri Lankans seeing proper relief and support, Jesper and Chris spent an additional two weeks in the southwestern city of Galle, established contacts and completed research for their project.

W.O.R.K. was initiated by two but is made up of many caring and hard working volunteers.  There will be several dozen volunteers from the April reconstruction effort joining the W.O.R.K. project in January.  We will also have many other volunteers joining us for the first time as well and everyone is very excited about returning to Sri Lanka and housing more people.  Each volunteer will stay as long as their lives allow since our project will last at least 10 weeks.  We are determined to complete our goal and will stay until the job is done.

The work we perform for those in need is reward unto itself when we feel the grateful hug of a newly housed family.  We look forward to returning in January and hope you can be a part of the project because we can only do this with the support of many and appreciate each and every contribution to the effort.  W.O.R.K. is non-profit and has no paid staff or administrative costs.  All work is done by volunteers.

For more information on their experience in April, read Chris' blog at Two Weeks Off.
